Boost Your Prompts with These 4 Magic Words
In a revealing study titled "Re-Reading Improves Reasoning in Large Language Models", researchers have uncovered a surprising, but simple technique to improve the performance of AI models like ChatGPT and Claude.
The method, dubbed "RE2", involves prompting the chatbot to re-read the question before attempting to answer.
For example:
Your original prompt:
'Question'
RE2 Prompt:
'Question
Read the question again: Question'
In the original prompt, the question is presented once. In the RE2 version, the four magic words, "Read the question again" are added before the same prompt.
The study suggests that this simple repetition of the question allows the AI to process the information more thoroughly. The research team, led by Xiaohan Xu, rigorously tested RE2 across an extensive set of 14 datasets, covering 112 experiments in arithmetic, commonsense, and symbolic reasoning tasks.
RE2 consistently boosted reasoning performance for various language models, including davinci-003 and ChatGPT, and across different prompting strategies like zero-shot and chain-of-thought. As Xu explains, "By re-reading the question, the model can grasp it from a more global perspective, similar to how humans benefit from re-reading."
Give it a try in your own prompts. All it takes is adding the four magic words, '"Read the question again."
Does AI Create More Original Ideas than Researchers?
Another fascinating study has pitted artificial intelligence against human researchers to see who can generate the most original research ideas. The AI tool came up with an impressive 4,000 novel concepts in mere hours, while 50 scientists worked independently to produce their own ideas.
In a surprising twist, reviewers who evaluated the ideas without knowing their origin found the AI-generated concepts to be more exciting than those from the human participants. Although, the AI ideas scored slightly lower on feasibility.
While the study has limitations, such as focusing on a single research area and potentially hindering the humans' best work, it raises intriguing questions about the role AI could play in ideation.
