Brands Beware: Your Ads Are Funding the AI Junk News Apocalypse

It's not only ChatGPT. All chatbots from Google’s Bard to Claude 2 make up sources, facts, and statistics out of thin air. The worst part is they spit them back at you with complete conviction.

Junk Websites Filled With AI-Generated Content Are Pulling in Money From Programmatic Ads

The internet as we know it is being flooded by a tidal wave of junk. Strange new websites are popping up overnight, packed with articles written not by humans, but by AI. These sites look real on the surface but it doesn't take long to realize there's little substance underneath. And advertisers are wasting millions having their ads shown on them.

In a new report from Newsguard, these AI content farms can churn out over 1,200 bot-written articles a day on any topic imaginable, with fake author bios and AI-generated images.

The sites fly under the radar looking convincingly real, but are actually hollow clickbait traps designed to siphon ad money through automated placements. It's a massive and growing problem. In fact, NewsGuard is discovering about 25 new AI-generated sites each week. Companies as big as GNC, Subaru, and Citigroup are falling victim to them.

Even Google, which made $168 billion in ad revenue last year, has served the majority of ads funding these sites despite policies against it.

So how did online advertising become the fuel powering this unsettling AI invasion? Who's masterminding these automated content farms? And is there any way to pull the plug before your own brand blows through piles of valuable ad dollars?

Unraveling AI

Subscriber Submitted Question: "I’m pretty overwhelmed by the amount of AI tools available with the avalanche of new ones coming out every week. Is it that important to try them all to make sure you’re always at the cutting edge?"

Our Answer: First, it's impossible to try them all - there are simply too many. You want to stay at the cutting edge of what will make you most successful. By focusing on a select group of tools like chatbots or AI art generators that align with your specific goals... you can get the 10X type of leverage promised with AI. Instead, if you have shiny object syndrome and jump to a new tool every day...you'll never actually get the long-term benefits.

Keep an eye on other tools...stay in the loop...but don't let them distract you from the ones that are going to give you your biggest ROI.

AI Companies Are In Desperate Need of Creative Writers

Calling all aspiring novelists and poets: Your writing skills are needed to feed the machines. Firms that create training data for AI models are now seeking to hire creative writers, as Rest of World first reported. It’s an opportunity that could one day spell the end of writers’ marketable skills. But in an age where reams of books are being fed to AI without permission, it’s at least a more honest way to get one’s hands on literary expertise.

The job listings have all the trappings of a gig economy side-hustle. Companies are offering hourly pay to candidates with graduate degrees or professional experience who can also work remotely.

Scale AI, a San Francisco–based AI training startup, posted the job “AI training for creative writers” in May for those fluent in English, Japanese, and Hindi. Offering an hourly wage of $25 to $50 based on educational attainment and experience, it specifically seeks candidates with master’s degrees and PhDs. Australian firm Appen also posted a job for “creative writing expert” and cast a net for writers with advanced degrees.

JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon Says Our Children Will Probably Only Work 3.5 days a Week Thanks to AI

Forget about the five-day workweek or even the four-day workweek. JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon thinks that the next generation of workers will only need to go into the office 3.5 days a week, thanks to AI.

"Your children will live to 100 and not have cancer because of technology and they'll probably be working three and a half days a week," Dimon told Bloomberg.
