Google Chrome Adds Smart AI-Powered Features
Google Chrome is adding three new generative AI features, ranging from the creative to the practical. The three new features include AI-powered tab organization, a way to use AI to generate tab backgrounds, and an AI writing feature that will debut next month.
But to turn them on, you’ll need to make sure your version of Chrome is up to date with version M121, and you’ll need to ensure you enable the experimental features via the Settings menu.

ElevenLabs Latest AI Unicorn After $80M Raise
Voice AI startup ElevenLabs raised an $80 million Series B at a unicorn valuation as investor interest in all AI tech remains at an all-time high. The Brooklyn-based company did not release an exact valuation, but did say it had reached “unicorn status.”
ElevenLabs allows creators, enterprises and others to use AI software to replicate voices in dozens of languages. The company is set to launch a set of new products, including a dubbing studio and a voice library marketplace.

Kanye West is giving fans a sneak peek of his upcoming album Vultures. On Tuesday, the Graduation rapper released a teaser trailer to his collaborative project with Ty Dolla $ign as the superduo ¥$. The trailer, directed by Jon Rafman, features a series of spooky clips of smiling clowns, explosions, wolves, civilians in masks and robes — and of course, vultures - said to made using various AI art tools.

ChatGPT Effect: Coursera Sees Signups for AI Courses Every Minute in 2023
U.S. edutech platform Coursera added a new user every minute on average for its artificial intelligence courses in 2023, CEO Jeff Maggioncalda said, in a clear sign of people upskilling to tap a potential boom in generative AI. Coursera is looking to offer even more AI courses along with companies that are the frontrunners in the AI race, including OpenAI and Google's DeepMind.

Meta is Pouring Money into the Creation of Human-Level AI
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a post on Facebook that he was bringing two of Meta’s existing research efforts “closer together”: a project called FAIR, which has focused on basic research, and a second named GenAI, which works on developing AI products for consumers.
Zuckerberg also said Meta was “building massive compute infrastructure to support our future roadmap,” including a stockpile of 350,000 computer chips known as H100s. The chips have been the go-to building block of AI data centers since Nvidia introduced them in 2022.

Global Tech Spending Expected to Keep Climbing on AI Demand
Companies worldwide are expected to spend 5.3% more on technology this year, fueled by higher investment in software and IT services, including generative artificial intelligence. Global tech spending will climb at a higher 5.3% growth this year compared to 3.5% in 2023, to hit $4.7 trillion, according to research and advisory firm Forrester.

AI Still Far More Expensive than Humans In Most Jobs: MIT Study
Countering several recent reports that suggest AI will take away millions of jobs, researchers at MIT have found that it is still a lot cheaper to use humans for most jobs in the US.
In a paper titled “Beyond AI Exposure,” MIT FutureTech offers a detailed evaluation of tasks viable for automation, specifically in the realm of computer vision. “We find that at today’s costs, US businesses would choose not to automate most vision tasks that have ‘AI Exposure,’ and that only 23% of worker wages being paid for vision tasks would be attractive to automate,” the researchers said.

Apple Boosts Plans to Bring Generative AI to iPhones
The iPhone maker has been more active than rival big tech companies in buying AI start-ups, acquiring 21 since the beginning of 2017, research from PitchBook shows. The most recent of those acquisitions was its purchase in early 2023 of California-based start-up WaveOne, which offers AI-powered video compression.
“They are getting ready to do some significant M&A,” said Daniel Ives at Wedbush Securities. “I’d be shocked if they don’t do a sizeable AI deal this year, because there’s an AI arms race going on, and Apple is not going to be on the outside looking in.”
