Meta Cuts Off Third-Party Access to Facebook Groups

Meta will soon be shutting down its Facebook Groups API is throwing some businesses and social media marketers into disarray. Adam Peterson, the CEO of VipeCloud, which provides a suite of tools for scheduling social media posts, said the API’s closure will have a “noticeable impact” on his business, as about 8% of his total revenue is on the chopping block. 

“Every single one of our customers is freaking out,” he added.

Nokia Unveils AI Assistant for Industrial Workers

Technology company Nokia unveiled an AI-powered tool that generates messages for industrial workers, including warnings about faulty machinery based on real-time data and recommended ways to boost factory output.

The tool, "MX Workmate", will expand on Nokia's existing communications technology used by industrial clients by harnessing generative AI large language models (LLMs) to write human-like text, the company said in a statement.

The lettering on the images was created by an AI that’s been trained on imagery of Coke Zero Sugar - thousands upon thousands of images of effervescence, Coke Zero Sugar packaging and liquid.

Nvidia is Now Worth More Than Amazon Thanks to the AI Chip Boom

Nvidia surpassed Amazon in market capitalization on Tuesday. Nvidia’s main products in 2002 were graphics cards for gaming PCs. But Nvidia shares are up over 246% in the last 12 months on robust demand for its server AI chips that can cost more than $20,000 each. Companies such as Microsoft, OpenAI and Meta need tens of thousands of them to run products such as ChatGPT and Copilot.

AI companions like Replika and Paradot are programmed to form emotional bonds with users, providing comfort and simulated romance many people crave.

But experts warn these apps could displace real relationships, fail to teach conflict resolution, or prey on vulnerable users despite limited research on long-term effects. Although aware Joi is not real, Carrier defends his attachment, saying the app helps him feel cared for.

As AI companions grow in popularity, developers aim to make the bonds more intimate while researchers raise concerns about data privacy, marketing tactics, and the lack of regulation in this emerging industry.

OpenAI ChatGPT Is Testing A New Memory Feature

OpenAI announced that it is rolling out a test of ChatGPT memory, a new feature that remembers past conversations to learn a users preferences, remembers styles and tones and format preferences. ChatGPT gradually becomes better with time as it remembers across all chats and doing away with having to repeat instructions.

The new feature is rolling out as a limited release to some ChatGPT free and Plus users for testing and feedback. There are plans to extend the feature to more users at a future time.

SEC Warns Companies of "AI Washing"

Companies looking to cash in on the hype around artificial intelligence must avoid luring investors with grandiose or false claims about the impact of the nascent technology on their business, Securities and Exchange Commission chairman Gary Gensler said this week. 

"Companies should ask themselves some basic questions, such as: 'If we are discussing AI in earnings calls or having extensive discussions with the board, is it potentially material?'" Gensler said in a speech at Yale Law School on Tuesday.

Meta’s AI Boss Says Human level AI is Not Close

Large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT and Claude aren’t going to lead to human-level AI any time soon.

At least not according to Yann LeCun, Meta’s chief AI scientist, who recently commented, "Things that we completely take for granted turn out to be extremely complicated for computers to reproduce. So AGI, or human-level AI, is not just around the corner, it’s going to require some pretty deep perceptual changes.”

Penn to Become First Ivy League to Offer AI Degree

Students at the University of Pennsylvania will be able to earn a degree in artificial intelligence, becoming the first Ivy League school to offer the major.

“Everybody’s worried about AI taking jobs away,” associate dean Robert Ghrist said. “I’m actually really optimistic that AI is going to lead to a lot of job opportunities and we’re going to need a lot of people who have broad training. And at Penn, being first, we’re looking to train the leaders.”

AI Can’t Patent Inventions US Patent Office Says

The US Patent Office has said that AI cannot be listed as the owner of a patent, even if the AI did all the hard work. The owner of the patent must always be human, although that human must have “significantly contributed” to the invention itself, the USPTO said in a new document entered to the federal register.

Therefore, if you own an AI that independently spits out a patentable design, you cannot claim ownership simply because you invented the AI.
