Subscriber Submitted Question: "I keep hearing about this "diffusion" thing in AI, especially for generating art and now music. What even is diffusion and why is it such a big deal?"
Our Answer: There are different types of generative AI models. ChatGPT is a large language model. Diffusion is another kind. Instead of trying to directly learn what real data looks like, they start from pure noise/static.
This is the fascinating way diffusion models work:
First they add noise incrementally to their training data (images, audio clips etc). This creates a sequence going from clean data to pure noise. Then they train the AI model to reverse that process.
So they take those noisy examples as input and learns to predict a slightly cleaner version. Once they're trained, to actually generate a new image or music clip, you feed in pure noise/static.
And the models work backwards, removing the noise step-by-step. That is until it produces its best guess of what a clean image or audio clip would look like based on its training.
What's cool is by learning this noise removal process rather than modeling the data directly...
Diffusion models can recreate fine details and patterns that make the generated output look or sound realistic. That's why they're becoming popular for AI tasks that require realistic outputs.
Because this diffusion approach can capture nuances that other generative methods may miss.

New Jaw-Dropping Music-Creating AI: Former Google Researchers Introduce Udio
AI startup Uncharted Labs, launched at the beginning of this year by former Google DeepMind researchers, has introduced a new tool for music creation - Udio. It’s already sparked a lot of enthusiasm and raised the bar of what we thought possible.
Ryan Morrisson, an AI editor at Tom’s Guide, called it “the most realistic AI music creation tool I’ve ever tried.”
Udio’s output may sound crisper than Suno's, which is a model released just a few weeks ago and was considered a breakthrough, Rolling Stone suggests. Some even claimed Udio to be a “Suno killer.”
“This buzz isn’t unfounded – early tests and leaked tracks suggest that Udio is not merely a step forward in AI music generation but a giant leap,” said Levent Bulusan in a review on Medium.
For now, Udio is a free beta product, and users can generate up to 1200 songs per month. The company warns that it may have “some rough edges.”
